She shook her head numbly at his comment. To her, it was more than just thunder, lightning, and rain. It was noise, anger, fear. Arai didn't know how to explain it; she was just afraid. It was even worse now that her hearing was increased. And her fear was something she couldn't overcome. All the muscles throughout her slender frame were taut, ready to do anything. But she couldn't do anything right now. Her eyes still stared, luminous in the flickering lights. Her teeth were tightly clenched, white showing around her lips. "N.....nnnno," she finally stammered out, trembling even more violently as another roll of thunder washed through her head.

Cameron saw that Arai wasn't ready to go anywhere and he saw that her body was shaking in fear. This was something that, again, he had never experienced before. However, in the military he had been trained a bit to deal with trauma patients, so maybe that would help him help Arai. Cameorn spoke soothingly and calmingly to Arai. " Alright, we will stay here. Everything will be alright." Cameron whispered and moved his right hand up and down her back gently. Apparently running something up and down someone's back was to be relaxing, so Cameron hoped that it would work.

Too much noise! The thunder resounded in her ears, refusing to let up. Finally she broke out of her frozen state and put her hands up over her ears, trying to block out the sound. Lightning flashed through the library, casting everything in a stark white light for a second before it died again. She flinched again as another bolt struck, shutting her eyes tightly. Then Arai felt hands running up and down her back, gently trying to calm her. Cameron. Her muscles refused to let up, refused to be comforted. Her mind still jumped wildly about, spooked by her phobia.

This storm wasn't letting up and Arai's fear seemed to be quite problematic for her. Cameron didn't know what else he could do for her. There were no shades for him to close and he wasn't going to be able to make the thunder stop. She was going to have to get through this somehow. Cameron, then did the only thing that he could do to try and calm her down. He wondered what Christina would think if she saw this, but this was part of his job and he could explain that. Cameron moved his other arm around her and held her close to him, rocking her gently, trying to calm her down. He moved her head so it was resting on his shoulder and whispered soothing words to her so she wouldn't be so spooked by the storm.

Paralyzed by fear, Arai could do nothing. She couldn't run, hide, or even speak. Her racing pulse hammered in her delicate throat, her light brown eyes dialated with fear and trepidation. She had been afraid of thunderstorms since she was four. One day she had wandered out into the woods, playing hide-and-seek with her friends. In a typical summer storm fashion, a thunderstorm struck without warning, leaving her in the woods. Ominous shadows had flashed and threatened, the driving rain soaking her to the bone. When her parents had found her, she was curled up by a tree, unable to stop screaming. That had traumatized her, and now she couldn't break free. Arai was suddenly aware of another heartbeat, strong and steady, in her ears. Half-opening her eyes, she saw that Cameron held her, his low, mellow voice soothing over the thunder. His strong arms wrapped around her, protecting her from the fury outside. Slowly, her racing heart began to calm and her breathing slowed from it's panicked gasping state.

Cameron smiled and kept moving his hands slowly up and down Arai's back. He was glad to see that she was beginning to calm down. It was good and it made him feel good to know that he had done something positive without having to use any firearms of any kind. Cameron kept her close to him, his heartbeat calm as it beat inside his muscled chest. " That's it, calm down, think of something else." Cameron whispered soothingly into her ear as he rocked her gently. " Think of sunshine, meadows, a small stream running with fish filling the waters." Cameron whispered, trying to find what he imagined would be a perfectly peaceful place. " What else do you see?" Cameron asked as he kept rocking her.

Her eyes slowly calmed, the pupils becoming less dialated as she listened to his voice. Her eyes closed as she tried to imagine the best place she had ever been. Her tightly pressed lips slowly softened into a smile as she thought. "The beach," she sighed wistfully, "with all my friends. We went for a week; my parents came too. Jason tried to teach me how to surf, but I wasn't very good. We had a bonfire one night; a fish fry, with music and fireworks and everything. We told stories, flew kites, fed the seagulls." Her smile brightened as she remembered her friend Jamie running after a cheeky bird that stole her sandwich. "And the last night Jason and I went on a long walk under the stars," she said, her body relaxing as she remembered that night.

Cameron could feel her body relaxing in his ripped arms as she spoke about her favorite memories. Cameron thought back to try and remember if he had any memories like that. He didn't. He was always in the military and never had ever had any time for girls or a personal life. Everything was yes sir and obeying orders, even for his father, for the short time he was with him. Cameron smile and kept rocking Arai. There was another crack of thunder and the lights went out completely and didn't turn back on. Cameron guessed the generators hadn't been turned on yet. Cameron kept rocking her and whispered to her, trying to keep her mind off the darkness as a bolt of lighting illuminated the room in light, " What happened on the walk?" Cameron asked.

Arai started a bit at the sudden darkness; then her night vision kicked in and she could actually see pretty well. "We just walked, and talked, and then he finally asked me to be his girlfriend," she said with a wistful look in her eyes. Her large eyes slowly deepened into sadness as she remembered the fate of her once-boyfriend. "Jason is....was....my best friend," she said morosely, "but no more....no more." The lightning illuminated the room for a second, revealing a single silver tear dripping down the ribbon-like scar that ran down her face.

" Shh, its alright," Cameron coaxed. He guessed that Jason had been killed by a werewolf or something tragic like that. He wondered if that was why she hated being what she was so much. Cameron didn't know what it was like to loose a loved on. There were only a few people that he should have loved in his family, but most of them he had not spoken with in over ten years. Cameron couldn't make up in his mind if he regretted it or not. Cameron continued to rock Arai as the lights came back on and a roll of thunder filled the air again

Arai slowly, sadly shook her auburn head. "No, it's not alright," she said softly. If she hadn't have wanted to go on a walk, he'd be alive right now. And she wouldn't be here. She would still be back at home with her friends, in college, learning and accepted by everyone. She hated this new self; she was shunned, hated, feared. Back home, she was the popular one, everyone's friend, nobody's enemy. As the lights came back on, she stared off into the distance, remembering better times.

Cameron sighed. He could tell that she was having some anxiety and depression issues. That probably came from being the most popular or one of the most popular people in school or at home, wherever that was for her. Cameron didn't know anything about that. He was always the skinny tall kid that everyone picked on. He just didn't have the muscle he had now. There were those that doubted he was puny until they saw some pictures of Cameron's underwear over his head. Cameron didn't know what to say to Arai, he didn't want to make anything worse for her so he just held her.

Slowly, the driving rain became a slow patter on the roof and the rolls of thunder receded into the distance. Arai calmed, stopped trembling, and stood up. Running a hand backwards through her short red hair, she gazed out the window at the gray skies. "Thanks, Cameron," she said, a bit embarassed, "Sorry I freaked out like that. Thunderstorms have always scared me, ever since I was little." Then she turned and went into the room he had been in before the thunder paralyzed her. It was best to not speak of the incident. "So," she said, picking up a book, "what were you going to show me?"

Cameron stood with her and walked over to where she was and had picked up a book. He beckoned to the other room when she asked what he had wanted to show her. " I was going to show you our collection on mystical creatures. Like i was saying, it isn't that large, but you are welcome to it." Cameron said and began to walk towards the room. The door was already open and Cameron continued to look back at Arai so that he knew that she was still with him. He walked into the room and opened his arms. " I think the werewolf section.." He said and walked over to the first bookshelf and pulled out a few books. " Is here." He concluded.

Arai was way ahead of him. She knew her way around a library. Pulling off the first book, she flipped through its contents, scanning for any relevant information. "Full moon......bite.....vicious creatures.." she murmered as she read. She stopped on a full page illustration of a werewolf in mid-snarl. The fangs dripped with drool and the fur bristled with menace, the eyes glowing an evil red hue. Snapping it shut, she pulled out the next one. Same thing. Placing both on the shelf, she turned and said, "Don't you have any scientific books? Like the chemistry behind the change? Or how it affects your other senses? All this is just about the full moon changings! There is so much more than that!"
