The helicopter ride was not long and within twenty minutes they were flying over Honolulu. Then within another five minutes there were flying over open space, and then the facility could be seen. It wouldn’t have been hard to find. It was the only thing for miles. It had walls around the perimeter for about a one hundred yard radius. There was an apartment complex in the middle and guns on the walls and Max could see marines patrolling the walls and in the field. The helicopter came in slowly and began its steady descend. The ride overall was pretty smooth. It took them a couple minutes to land and the marines exited, opening the door for Max and Cameron .Cameron stepped out first and offered his hand to Max to help her down. She probably didn’t need it, but he was still a gentleman for the most part. Two officers were coming up to the landing pad behind Cameron as he exited the helicopter. The marines on either side of the door remained silent and stood like statues.

Stepping out unaided on her good leg, Max gazed around at the facility, her mind already beginning a highly detailed map of the premesis. It was instinct; she did it without thinking. Already if dropped in the islands of Hawaii she could probably find her way back. As far as she figured, her bird genes included a homing pigeon sort of instinct. It was the reason she knew where the lab was. Which was the reason she stayed far away from it. Her wings kept close to her, so close Max felt like they would eventually meld to her skin. She stood next to Cameron, not diminished in size standing next to him. After all, she was only 3 inches shorter. The two officers that approached made her want to fly away. Too many official-looking people. Uniforms bred greater distrust in her mind.

Cameron could tell that Max was a bit uptight around so many military people. She had a right to be after what those others had done to her. The officers that came up to Cameron saluted him and then looked at Max as if they were studying her. After a moment the officer on the left looked at Cameron. “She doesn’t look like Arai, Cameron.” The man said and Cameron nodded his head. “As I am aware, I made a change.” Cameron retorted quickly and then beckoned for Max to follow him. Cameron began to walk and the two officers took up the rear. Cameron leaned over and whispered to Max, “Don’t worry, everyone is harmless here. They are like robots and won’t do anything without my command.” He said reassuringly.

Arai? So that was the name of the girl he had searched for. A lost love? Max guessed not, or he would have been sadder that he hadn't found her. And harmless? Hardly. Little was harmless these days. She almost felt sorry for them, were they the 'robots' he spoke of. To live without a will of your own would be a most horrible fate. If not for her willpower Max doubted she would have survived. Beside Cameron with the officers behind her, Max kept her back straight. Slouching only defined the wings more. She felt as if the officers were trying to pick her apart with their eyes, to figure out why she had come and not the Arai they had searched for. Arai.....an interesting name. Greek, to be more specific. It meant 'cursed'. Was that the life the mysterious girl lived? Max wanted to know more, but for now she kept her questions and deductions to herself. For now she just wanted to make it through this alive and free.

Cameron walked with Max all the way to the apartment complexes and to the main terminal in the center of the courtyard. Skywalks ran to the terminal above them and the building looked like a main control tower. It wasn’t it was just the elevator shaft. However, this shaft was important because it was the only way into the base. Cameron put in his fingerprints and then had his eye scanned and his voice analyzed before the elevator doors opened and Cameron stepped inside with Max, the officers saluted and let him go into the elevator with Max. The doors closer and Cameron looked over at Max, “You did fine. I don’t believe anyone has too many suspicions other than why you are here.” He said calmly.

Fairly impressive, their security. Not the most amazing she'd seen, but enough to keep out most. Most didn't include her, however. It was good Max wasn't trying to break in. But she knew the scientists could get a solid lock on her now that she was relatively stationary. The tracking device only worked well up to a point. If she kept on the move, they could only see the general area she was in. The more stationary she was, the closer they could get until the monitor pinpointed her location. Standing in the elevator, she listened to the hum of machinery as they rose. "No suspicions other than why I am not Arai," Max replied. "So what happens now?" Max wanted to be prepared for anything, and knowledge was key to that.

It would take the elevator a while to reach the bottom level of the base because it was several feet underground. Cameron would have a little bit of time to explain what was going to happen. “Well as long as you are with me there will not be any questions about what you are doing here. No one questions me; after all I am the leader, the only leader. You will meet a character named Brandon I am sure. He will inquire as to why you are here. Let me talk to him, don’t say anything or do anything out of the ordinary. He is not a very trusting person. Everyone other than him will treat you with a sort of mild neglect. They have a lot more important things to be doing that wondering who you are. Now, you said you were being followed by the scientists, how exactly can they find you?” Cameron asked.

No questions voiced, anyways. There were always questions and hence, there were always rumors. The less time she spent here the better. This Brandon sounded like someone she would not like. Fortunately for Max, she knew how to be silent. Sometimes, just to irk the scientists, she would not talk for weeks on end, just stare morosely when they asked questions. It was a wonderfully effective mind trick. "There's a chip," she revealed a bit hesitantly, "they put it in a year or two ago. Or at least I think so. The key is that the less I move, the more specific a coordinate they can lock on. That's why I don't want to stay long; in a few days they will be able to pinpoint me and just wait for me to emerge. They never stop looking." Ominous, yes, but the truth. If the world knew what they had been doing these many years, there would be trouble all around. And Max was the focal point of that.

Cameron listened to her and when she said there was a chip he smiled. He could get rid of chips or any other sort of tracking device if it was inside the body or not. She wouldn’t even have to undergo surgery. The elevator stopped and the doors opened to reveal a white room. That was it. Cameron walked over to the only thing in the room, a keypad. He took a key from his pocket and turned it and then said the password. He wasn’t worried about her hearing the password, it was changed every day. Then suddenly, to their left the wall opened. Cameron beckoned for Max to follow him as he walked through the new door. He came to another room and there was black glass that you couldn’t see through on the wall. Cameron and Max stood in the room for a moment, “They are scanning us for any devices or anything unusual that might show that we are alien somehow. Then they will emit an EM blast to knock out any electronic devices.” He turned to Max, “It will disable your chip.” He said and then after a painless moment, the door opened and they moved on into the base.

Max shook her head vigorously to indicate that wouldn't work. "They can pick up the trace of it, but never hack it, never knock it out. Electromagnectic blasts don't work; trust me," she warned. After the chip had been installed they had continued with their electrolysis tests until she had broken out. The chip was not that simple to disarm. "And don't hack it!" she warned, "knowing them they installed a security system that will act as a bomb or a poison pack or something! I really don't want to die, Cameron." In reality she didn't know quite what would happen if they tried it. Even if it didn't kill her, it could implant some virus. You never knew with the scientists.

They were not walking in the base and Cameron listened to what Max was saying. He mused to himself about what she said about her tracking chip being immune to electro magnetic pulses. Well that just sucked on a couple of different levels. Cameron didn’t want to have her undergo surgery again. He didn’t know how her mind would feel about that idea. His men could hack it. It was possible, no matter what she said. Anything could be hacked, especially by the people that he had working for him. Either way, Cameron would do nothing without her consent. He trusted that the signal would be greatly weakened because how far down they were underground. They turned and went down plain hallways, soldiers were at every door and many were walking around. This was a well guarded base. Cameron finally came to a door and opened it. He beckoned with his hand for Max to go in, “These will be your living quarters while you are here.” He said calmly.

Max knew from his face that he did not quite believe her about the chip. Oh, he did not doubt that the chip existed, or that it was immune to EM pulses, but she figured it was the hacking thing. Yes, it could be hacked if they had a few years to concentrate on doing so. Not in a few days, and not now. It was a chip that was specially developed, and Max guessed that anyone that triggered an alarm that the chip was being hacked would suffer consequences. Or make her suffer them. That was the problem with the military, Max thought, was that sometimes they just wouldn't take no for an answer. Admitting something wasn't possible was not a weakness, but rather a strength. How could you know your strengths without being sure of your weaknesses? Coming to a room that was apparently hers, she looked inside, her blue-gray eyes scanning and memorizing it. Rather nondescript, all in all, standard size. A bed, a dresser, a bathroom. Nothing out of the ordinary. Though Max wouldn't be surprised if there were a mini camera or recording device of some sort hidden somewhere. Still, better than a too-small cage.

Cameron remained silent while Max surveyed her surroundings. Cameron would let her get settled in before he told her just what she was going herself into. She still didn’t know about the army of vampires that were going to be coming in a day. Usually there wasn’t this much security everywhere, but with the battle that was coming, security had increased tremendously. After a few minutes, Cameron walked into the room and pointed out the video recorder on the wall in the corner. “That is in all of the rooms if you would like to know.” Cameron said calmly. There was even a camera in his room. “No one watches them, we just record and when something important happens, we can refer back to them if need be. “ Cameron said calmly and then took a few steps into the room. “The bathrooms are down the hall and the guards will point you in the direction. Please, try not to stray beyond those rooms without me or a bodyguard. It will get you into trouble as I am sure you already guessed.”

Yes, of course there was a video camera. And no, she didn't believe that they never watched them. An interesing occurence would be her, and Max would bet money that someone would be watching those tapes. That sucked. It meant more confinement of her wings. And a public bathroom? More suckishness. Half of her just wanted to get it over with, to announce that she had wings so she could have them out. But that would also mean no peace or anonyimity. So for now her true nature remained secret. Max figured all in all she didn't need a bodyguard. Though she was a girl, very slender, and only sixteen, she was probably stronger than most of these men. But still she would comply, just to avoid arousing suspicion. "Very well," she said with the air of one who is grudgingly accepting a term, "I will. But what now? My part of the deal was that you could ask what you wanted and I'd answer if I could."
